Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics
A Practical Guide for Students
- Jeremy J Foster - Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

The spread of sophisticated computer packages and the machinery on which to run them has meant that procedures which were previously only available to experienced researchers with access to expensive machines and research students can now be carried out in a few seconds by almost every undergraduate. Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the basis for gaining an understanding of what these analytic procedures do, when they should be used, and what the results provided signify.
This comprehensive textbook guides students and researchers through the transition from simple statistics to more complex procedures with accessible language and illustration. Each chapter covers a separate statistical method and provides:
- An outline of the technique
- Examples of the types of question it answers
- An explanation of the information that can be gleaned from the results
- Examples from published literature of how the technique has been used in a range of disciplines
- Frequently asked questions
- A comprehensive chapter summary
- Suggestions for further reading
- A glossary of key terms
As statistical techniques become increasingly common and the understanding of these becomes ever more essential, Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics is an essential guide for all students and researchers throughout the social sciences.
Foster and colleagues provide basic understanding and knowledge of some statistical procedures being increasingly used in numerous diverse real-life situations; this volume particularly addresses problems in the social sciences. . . .This is an interesting book with complex statistical procedures in a simple, easy-to-understand style. It should appeal to all readers with limited knowledge of mathematics who want to learn the applications of these techniques. Summing Up: Highly recommended.
Most of the student who register for this course are established professionals and I think they will find this book and information presented in it useful to understand practical application of statistical method. I will recommend this book.
Very useful textbook for Social Science post-graduate students!
Easy to read introduction to more complex statistical methods.
I found this book very easy and pleasant to read, with clear explanations of the different methods throughout and good use of illustrative examples and supportive exercises. I will certainly be recommending this to our students to help them get to grips with advanced statistics!
Nice slim volume useful for graduate students in clinical psychology
It provides a good overview of different advanced statistical methods and is very palatable, even to those who are not very mathematically inclined. I would have liked to see more mathematics.
A really good book, it offers a useful view of advanced stats in an easy to follow way. I can see this being extremely useful for those students who want to use more advanced stats or those working with slightly more complex data. I have no issues adding this text to my reading list and will happily recommend it to students. The language and style of writing is very student friendly
At the moment, it is still unclear if the course I had in mind when I ordered the copy will be a reality.
On the other hand, I am very impressed with the book - this is exactly the kind of tool I wish I'd had available when I first learned the ropes in statistics, and I have been using it myself already.
Any student who is moving from basic-level skill-and-drill training in e.g. SPSS to reading quantitative research in detail and conducting their own studies will benefit greatly from this clear and highly readable text, which starts (and continually summarizes) where most basic training for e.g. psychology students leaves off.
I have already recommended it to many students and colleagues, and will definitely adapt it next time i teach a relevant class.
Very good, step by step guide trough the research process, followed by suitable "statistical" examples.
