Praise for the First Edition:
"At last a well-written, balanced and insightful British book on leadership. It is a real tour-de-force. It is probable that every theory and assertion of consequence is commented upon. This certainly is a major text that will be difficult to follow."
- Emeritus Professor Gerry Randell, University of Bradford School of Management
"Theory and Practice of Leadership is an all encompassing, global review of examples and case studies that is both comprehensive and easily adaptable to almost any situation one would encounter in leading people."
- Richard J. Conwell, Nova Southeastern University, Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship
This book shows how to make the kind of difference that all organizations, both public and private sector, want and need. Early chapters show the powerful effect leadership can have on organizations, subsequent chapters present new ideas that are elegantly simple, conceptually coherent and radically different, based on the best research in the field. The ideas in this book have also been tested in major multinational organizations over recent years. The aim is to provide leaders and those who work with them with a practical guide to how to increase the effectiveness of leadership in any organization. Clear analysis of effective leadership and how leadership teams need to work together to be complete. The authors take us beyond 'heroic leadership' – the concepts are new, powerful and provocative. Amidst the clutter of books on leadership, this book stands out. It helps make sense of a whole range of leadership theories and integrates it all into the authors' own compelling view of what makes leaders effective.
A comprehensive and insightful text useful for undergraduate students to dip into. An excellent postgraduate resource.
A really well written and balanced British book that gives an excellent overview of the main theories regarding leadership current best practise. A must have for Business Students.
Interesting book, well put together and laid out. I particularly like the fact that it does not focus too heavily on leadership theories (which is covered extensively in other texts) but focuses more on the application of leadership. I particularly like the chapter on leadership development issues.
Level not appropriate for the students.
Preferred the Northouse book
I would use this for second or third year undergrad rather than the first years. Very in-depth.
A recommended book that outlines the theories of leadership in a clear and concise manner.
On reading, the text is not fully appropriate for healthcare students. Very good overall introduction, however.
Useful reference book for the 2nd and 3rd years
