The Qualitative Researcher's Companion
Qualitative Research
There is no longer any question that qualitative inquiry is fundamental to the enterprise of social science research, with a broad reach and a history all its own. This book seeks to introduce readers to selections that provide a solid intellectual grounding in the area of qualitative research.
Thoughtfully and painstakingly culled from over a thousand candidate articles, The Qualitative Researcher's Companion examines the theoretical underpinnings, methodological perspectives and empirical approaches that are crucial to the understanding and practice of qualitative inquiry.
Incisive, provocative, and drawn from across the many disciplines that employ qualitative inquiry, The Qualitative Researcher's Companion is a key addition to the bookshelf of anyone involved in the research act.
I highly recommend this book for novice researchers who will do qualitative research in their thesis study
This text is exactly what it says it is a 'companion' to qualitative research. It is useful for undergraduate self study research projects as a supplementary text. It offers in depth explanations and an academic approach to qualitative research methods.
Additional reading for advanced students on particular topics of interest covered in the various chapters of the book.
The book was never received by me
A must-have book for all students
This is a useful companion text that guides the novice and more mature researcher through the various compexities of undertaking qualitative research. I particularly like the chapter on Narrative, which, with the increasing move towards technology-enahanced learning is coming more to the fore
A very useful book for students learning about qualitative research
A usefull book but difficult for 2. year students
As a guide or field manual for qualitative researchers, in operational terms, qualitative researcher’s companion provides demonstrations of the procedures involved in analysing data sets in terms of how these procedures were accomplished. This text discusses succinctly the findings from real case studies in relation to the trustworthiness, validity and usefulness of the results of different methods and approaches used in qualitative research. This book consists of 16 chapters which fall under three sections: (1) Theories and Analysis, tackles issues concerning constructing theories based upon case study research, the importance of validity in qualitative research, and what to consider when collecting soft data; (2) Methodological perspectives, covers reducing bias in qualitative evaluations, approaches to data analysis, generalisability issues with regards to the results of qualitative research findings, assessing the results of case study reports; and (3) Empirical studies, discusses different types of empirical studies employed in qualitative research across various disciplines and settings before concluding with, reflections and advice for anyone about to begin a qualitative research project. This book is essential reading for qualitative researchers new to the field of qualitative research and for anyone about to begin a qualitative study.
Although the title is a bit misleading, the book provides an useful selection of reprinted journal articles and book chapters for those who are about to engage in qualitative research. It offers seminal readings to specific topics such as theory building, validity, and generalizability in qualitative research. Therefore, I can recommend it as a supplemental reading.
