Special Educational Needs in the Early Years
A Guide to Inclusive Practice

November 2020 | 184 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Employing a comprehensive blend of theory, policy and practice, Penny Borkett unpacks the vital elements of SEND in the Early Years through the lens of inclusion.

This title incorporates:

-       The development of legislation and policy relating to SEND

-       A wide-range of recommended readings

-       Reflection points to aid in independent study

-       Case studies linking theory to practice

Written in an accessible style, Special Educational Needs in the Early Years seeks to empower students to not only understand the impact of policy on practice, but to question it.

Penny Borkett was a Senior Lecturer in Early Years and Early Childhood Studies at Sheffield Hallam University.

Chapter 1 - Legislation and policy relating to SEND

Chapter 2 - The dilemma that is inclusion

Chapter 3 - Early intervention and its importance in the early years

Chapter 4 - Observation and assessment in the early years

Chapter 5 - The ambiguities of play

Chapter 6 - Partnerships with parents and families

Chapter 7 - Educational provision and inclusion

Chapter 8 - Conclusion

This is a really good introduction for students new to SEND. The case studies and reflections are engaging, linking theory to practice and the real world.

Dr Austin Griffiths
Freelance academic and previously Programme Leader for the BA Education Studies and MA Education Practice at De Montfort University

Written in an accessible format for foundation and undergraduate courses. This book is rich with case study experiences surrounding the complexities of inclusion. It both challenges and informs.

Syreeta Charles-Cole
Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, St Mary’s University

I would recommend this book as an informative and engaging introduction to Inclusion in the Early Years. Key terminology is defined and the concept of inclusion is explored within a historical and political context.  Case studies, strategies and reflective questions challenge thinking and support professional practice.

Claire Jackson
Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for Early Years and PGCE Primary, Kingston University

This provides students with a clear understanding on SEN in the early years which is accessible, with useful points to consider, prompting reflection on practice.
