Six Key Approaches to Counselling and Therapy

Second Edition
  • Richard Nelson-Jones - Fellow of the British Psychological Society and of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

December 2010 | 216 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

"A succinct, up-to-date account, which makes available the complexity of Jung's metapsychology to the interested reader." Ann Casement, Analytical Psychologist, Licensed Psychoanalyst

"Clear, thorough and succinctly summarizes cognitive therapy's most important concepts and principles." Dr Judith Beck, President, Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research, Philadelphia

Professor Robert Wubbolding, Director, Center for Reality Therapy, Cincinnati, OhioThis updated and revised new edition of Six Key Approaches to Counselling and Therapy provides an accessible introduction to the theory and practice of six of the most popular contemporary therapeutic approaches from the three main schools of therapy practice:

  • cognitive therapy and solution-focused therapy from the cognitive-behavioral school
  • person-centerd and Gestalt therapy from the humanistic school
  • Freud's psychoanalysis and Jung's analytical therapy from the psychodynamic school.

Following a clearly-defined structure, each chapter describes the origin of the therapeutic approach, a biography of its originator, its theory and practice, discusses case material and further developments, and suggests further reading. Richard Nelson-Jones goes on to review and evaluate all the approaches in his concluding chapter.

This excellent textbook is a vital resource for students on introductory courses and those who are starting out on professional training.

A good companion for counselling students and trainee therapists, this book provides a concise introduction to the main theoretical modalities. Each chapter provides a clear overview of the origins of the modality, introducing the main theorists and key concepts. Explanations are clear and clinical examples illustrate the key points discussed. Useful reflective questions are included at the end of each chapter which helps consolidate the learning gained and helps instil a reflective approach to practice.

Excellent, well-written, simple, accessible English - well suited to both the beginning student of counselling and psychotherapy and to the well seasoned practitioner. This well-structured accessible account of six approaches to counselling and therapy does exactly as it says on the 'tin'. It provides the reader/student/trainer with a concise, yet thorough account of these six approaches, including excellent biography of the originators, showing the student that the lives of the theorists are seen as important in understanding the development of their therapeutic approaches. Great use of boxes throughout to highlight concepts, and provide examples of specific interventions. Additionally, in accord with the premise that counselling is a personal journey, the author has included some pertinent reflective review questions that encourage the reader to relate the material to their own life. A succinct, up-to-date account of these approaches. A vital resource for me and my students.
