Qualitative Researching
- Jennifer Mason - University of Manchester, UK
The Second Edition of this best-selling text offers students and first-time researchers invaluable guidance on the practice of qualitative social research.
Throughout the author addresses the key issues which need to be identified and resolved in the qualitative research process, and through which researchers develop essential skills in qualitative research. The book highlights the "difficult questions" that researchers should get into the habit of asking themselves in the course of doing qualitative research, and outlines the implications of the different ways of responding to these questions.
The new edition of Qualitative Researching has been fully revised and updated with expanded coverage of observation, documents, visual data, CAQDAS, and writing qualitative research. The text bridges the gap between "cookbook" approaches to qualitative research and abstract methodogical approaches. Helping the reader to move comfortably between principle and practice, this text has proved to be an invaluable introduction to qualitative research, and a useful aid to accomplished qualitative research practice across the social sciences.
A very useful textbook, well structured and laid out; making it easy to navigate through.
Appropriate for tutors and students alike.
The author has produced a text which can be used by all students looking to expand their concept of qualitative research. It address the difficult questions that this research method poses and provides the reader with the tools to perform qualitative research in practice.
Superb book on the suject of qualitative research
It covers some of the key issues in two of my lectures: the first focuses on 'Making Problems Researchable: Objectives, Questions, Answers', the second is a research methods introductory session on qualitative research methods.
Reprinted (2012) edition of Mason's 2002 introduction to Qualitative Researching built around a question and answer approach. Ideal for undergraduate students approaching qualitative research for the first time.
This book provides a sound introduction to the underpinning principles and practice of qualitative research.
In this 2nd Edition, Jennifer Mason continues to press the importance of coherence between the research problem, aim(s)/question, methodological choice, data collection methods and analysis. It is a valuable companion to methods texts, which do not address the issue of rigour and coherence with the same tenacity. A vital text for Masters and PhD students whose enthusiasm for collecting data requires balancing with a close understanding of seemingly abstract methodological issues if they are to understand the research process. In particular Part 1 is a must read.
This is an excellent overview of qualitative research from underpinning theories through to data collection and analysis.
A useful source of specifically practical guidance for qualitative research. Useful for all years of undergraduate study.
It is the main book and a usefull introduction to qualitative research
New to the 2nd edition:
- Expanded coverage of observation, documents, visual data, CAQDAS, and writing qualitative research
- An appendix drawing together issue raised in the book
