SAGE announces the "Tejeshwar Singh Memorial Award for Excellence in Writing on the Urban”
10th Feb 2017: The world’s leading independent academic publisher, SAGE in association with Indian Institute for Human Settlements is pleased to announce the first winner of the “Tejeshwar Singh Memorial Award for Excellence in Writing on the Urban” at City Scripts – The IIHS Urban Writings Festival held recently in Bangalore.
The award is an initiative to honor the memory of “Tejeshwar Singh”, the former Managing Director of SAGE India and doyen of the publishing industry in South Asia. SAGE’s commitment towards promoting innovative and quality research takes another quantum leap with the inception of this prestigious award. The winner will be awarded a certificate of recognition and cash prize of Rs 50,000/- annually at the City Scripts event.
This year the award has been given to Ms Amrita Shah for her work "For Ahmedabad: A City in the World". The jury felt that Amrita Shah’s work presents one of the most powerful biographies of the city. Richly researched, dexterously crafted and elegantly written, this masterpiece is a valuable contribution to the fledgling literature on cities.

SAGE is the principal supporter and knowledge partner of City Scripts – The IIHS Urban Writings Festival—the first festival in India that exclusively focuses on urban writings. It brings together novelists, journalists, activists, thinkers, architects, planners, poets, bloggers and the lay community which lives in Indian cities, and engages with the experience of living in these cities by writing about it in different genres.
The festival was held on the campus of Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) from 3rd to 5th February 2017. IIHS is a national education institution committed to the equitable, sustainable and efficient transformation of Indian settlements. IIHS aims to establish an independently funded and managed National University for research and innovation that focuses on the challenges and opportunities of India’s urban transition.
