First Book of ‘SAGE Series on Politics in Indian States’ released on “Post Mandal Politics in Bihar”
First Volume of SAGE Series on Politics in Indian States title, "Post Mandal Politics in Bihar: Changing Electoral Patterns" by Sanjay Kumar was released in presence of Suhas Palshikar, Indian Academic, Social and Political Scientist; Manisha Priyam, Associate Professor, National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA); Pavan Varma, Former Indian Foreign Service officer; former Member, Rajya Sabha and Member of Janata Dal (United) and Manoj Jha, National Spokesperson, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Elected Member to Rajya Sabha and Vivek Mehra, Managing Director & CEO, SAGE Publications India at an event held in New Delhi.
Post Mandal Politics in Bihar is the first book in the SAGE Series on Politics in Indian States, which comprises volumes covering important trends in the politics of major states of India. It focuses on the electoral performance of various parties in the state and the changes party alliances have undergone. The book traces the social and economic history of Bihar and the underlying reasons for its fragmented, caste-driven, and religion-driven politics. Additionally, it covers governance, leadership, and development, which are crucial factors in ensuring growth and prosperity of this state
Speaking at the occasion, Pavan Varma stated that, “Indian Democracy embarks on a journey through a tour of key issues of contestation and mobilization that have occupied the terrain of democratic politics in India. While taking a long – term view of democracy, the book is alive to the more contemporary challenges as well. Warning against tendencies of becoming majoritarian, the book points to contemporary challenges of democracy’s distortions and weakening of diversity. It is an essential read for anyone who wishes to understand the various challenges before Indian democracy and the possibilities for its growth.”

Manoj Jha stated during the discussion that, “Bihar is politically one of the most significant states of India, with many politicians from this region being prominent in national politics. Post – Mandal Politics in Bihar presents a detailed account of Bihar’s electoral politics from the 1990s right up to the recent breakup of the RJD-JU (U)-Congress Grand Alliance. Though my read of the book, I found that the book traces the social and economic history of Bihar and the underlying reasons for its cover governance, leadership and development which are crucial factors in ensuring growth and prosperity of this state.”
The release was followed by a panel discussion on the book chaired by Suhas Palshikar, Indian Academic, Social and Political Scientist.
