A Book on Gender Scorecards for Indian States released
25 April 2018: A Gender Atlas of India with Scorecard by Radha Kumar with Marcel Korff and Karthika Sudhir was released in presence of Farah Naqvi, writer and activist; Sushmita Dev, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha and President, All India Mahila Congress; and Sonia Singh, Editorial Director, NDTV and Anchor, The NDTV Dialogues at an event held in New Delhi.
The release was followed by a panel discussion on the book moderated by Farah Naqvi and she stated, “With the release of this particular book for the coming years and months, we will quote this book for reference because there is no detailed statistical data regarding this issue.”
Sharing her experiences, Sonia Singh said, “Women’s rights have become human rights and now we have a score card for each state to look at. It is actually something we need in our everyday media bytes, till now we did not have any proper research done on women’s issues of their everyday life, but now we have a book for all this.”

Speaking at the occasion, author Radha Kumar elaborated about the book, “The book have 8 overall indicators and 28 sub-indicators, it looks at how India is performing on various aspects, including sex ratio, women’s education, employment, health, political participation and representation; and prevention of crimes against women. Unlike previous attempts, this book examines the change in India’s performance over a 15-year period, compares the situation of women in India to that in its neighborhood and internationally, and rates each Indian state and union territory individually.”
This SAGE India title, A Gender Atlas of India is a seminal body of work, which comprehensively maps and grades India’s performance from 2001 to 2016 on issues of concern for women.
