This book is essential reading for those interested in ethnographic research in a variety of settings, working independently and/or as part of a multi-disciplinary team. It is excellent on fieldwork performances as routes to learning to see, not only the visual but also to catch the unseen elements of sensory experience, memories and imaginations.
An excellent text which orients research students in the arts to the uses of images in their research. Valuable additions in the new edition for online/internet images and their use.
Essential for any student doing visual ethnography or anthropology.
Clearly written and prompts further investigation
I enjoyed reading this book and it has provided me with ideas on how to teach ethnography to my students.
A great book that covers all the important steps for thhose whho are using visual methods/data in their research. Even though the book is geared towards ethnographers it is an amazing read for anyone who is implementing any visual materials in their project
Broad scope of creative use of visual methods - not particularly applicable to nursing research (I was reviewing for consideration as part of a research methods course) but extremely useful to anyone interested in evolving ethnography approaches
A valuable introduction to the subject, with application across a broad range of visual and media studies.
A must have book in the area
This is an accessible and well laid out course text that has proved very helpful in teaching students about using visual methods in ethnographic research.
A great book to introduce a growing but fairly new field. Very useful and well organised.
This text will prove extremely useful to my students, a number of whom choose to undertake visual ethnography projects. It is clearly written and covers both theoretical and practical issues.
This book is very useful for the practical proponents of ethnographic research. It provides detailed examples of ethnographic work, supported by appropriate pictures and analysis. What it lacks in theory is certainly made up for in the kinaesthetic aspects of lived-experience.
a good text that helps students understand visual approaches to research
This is an excellent resource for people thinking about using visual ethnographic approaches to their research
Very interesting book which touches all aspects of ethnographic work and takes into account the complexities, also ethical, of the lens.
This is a very useful book, with lots of concrete examples for students. I will add it to my list of suggested readings for those students who wish to undertake a visual methods research project.
Excellent introduction to a new, growing field.
This is recommended within qualitative research course for visual analyses of data - taught in Narrative methods.
This book provides thorough coverage of the subject and it will be useful for those students pursuing this approach in their dissertations
