'As someone new to teaching and anxious to gain the means to help all children, I found Conteh's book gave me the backstory and tools to look forward with confidence to teaching EAL learners. The book is snappy, concise and easy to read; all rather important when on an intense time-limited course. I would recommend this to other PGCE students'-Richard Newbury
PGCE Student, Leeds University
Excellent book, very well written.
Essential resource for trainee teachers preparing for the teaching of EAL pupils.
This book is a valuable resource for our students. It is well written and clear in its intentions. It is the first book many of our students turn to.
A thorough overview of the key issues. Supporting children with EAL is becoming everyday practice that everyone working with children should know how to do. This book should help and I particularly think chapter 5 will be useful for teacher trainees.
A very useful, practical book for any teacher/trainee working with EAL pupils.
I have advised any of my trainees who have shown an interest in EAL to have a look at this book.
A very useful introduction to EAL for undergraduate students, which introduces the key concepts and approaches to EAL in a very accessible way.
This title will provide excellent support for students during both English curriculum and Education Studies modules when content covers second language acquisition. The content is very accessible for undergraduates and provides a good balance of theory, practice and opportunities for personal reflection.
This is an extremely accessible text with excellent reflective tasks and plenty of up to date information. A core text.
This is a useful book for teachers and trainee teachers. It is simple to understand and provides a guide to the essential needs of EAL learners.
Adopted as an essential reading source
A very helpful text covering all the basics for ITT students and early career professionals
This is a suitable text which will help students who choose the optional unit on EAL learners in primary schools
very accessible for students and staff
I believe this has been adopted by a colleague more involved with EAL
A highly accessible text which addresses pertinent issues relating to this group of learners. Offers clear guidance for practitioners; an excellent mix of academic theory and strategies/examples for practice
Many primary PGCe have no experince of working with children who have English as an additional language.
This books gives them an exceelent starting point to reflet on their practice and begin to understand the needs of children.
This book clearly sets out theory and practical strategies for teaching EAL learners in primary schools. It is easy to read and each chapter identifies learning outcomes and activities that may be undertaken in order to enhance teaching in school. The theory is clearly explained and underpins practical classroom strategies that any teacher would find helpful when embarking upon their teaching career. It is ideal fro ITE students as it links theory to practice and relates this to the 2012 Teachers' Standards.
does what it says on the tin and very accesible
Good supplemental reading for education students.
