'McNiff and Whitehead address their book to the practitioner, and in line with other commentators see AR as a form of practitioner research. The crux of McNiff and Whitehead's project seems to be to find a way to 'square the circle' of accepting that AR has the nature that it does, which necessarily makes it different from traditional academic research, yet making it seems suitable as a basis for academic awards at universities without compromising its AR nature.
This book is recommended to supplement other research methods books.
This book does what it says on the tin, it explains in simple but intelligent language about doing and writing Action Research. The book argues that practitioners can and should conduct their own research to 'improve the future by acting on the present'. An excellent book recommended to our year 2 Cert Ed/PGCE students as an essential text.
The book contains lots of practical useful guidance for students required to undertake action research as part of their studies.
Another good book from Jean McNiff
This is an excellent resource as a "how-to" guide. Practical and user-friendly, it is a great field text to guide in-service practitioners in the process of doing action research. It would make an excellent companion text in Action Research courses but would likely require a supplementary resource that speaks to the more theoretical aspects of AR.
This will be a helpful addition to support students' appreciation of the subtle differences/similarities in research and reflective practice
This book will provide a very sound basis for students and staff to carry out their research projects. The authors explain in detail and clearly, the fundamentals of research and lead the reader through the process successfully.
A useful addition to our current recommeded texts for students, especially those who are also practioners, undertaking active research projects in the workplace.
This is a detailed and user friendly guide for anyone considering action research as a research approach. The authors are thorough in answering the questions they pose with regards to the importance of writing during the research process and the text is particularly geared towards Masters and doctoral level students.

This is a valuable book in a number of ways. Firstly it is written in an enthusiastic and accessible manner; you feel as if you are having a discussion with the authors. Secondly it builds the reader's confidence by developing chapter by chapter a working framework with lots of examples, tips and further reading. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, it contexutalises Action Research within traditional academic research paradigms which as well as explaining what action research is, provides a comprehensive account of epistemology and all its inherent complexities.
A straightforwardly written, easy to understand text. Covers all the questions students ask and is structured in clear brief sections. Not all students undertake action research but a sizeable number do and this text is encouraging for those considering this methodology. Students also critique action research and this would be useful for them also.
This is a well written book aimed at people embarking on research at PGCE, degree and higher degree programmes. It is a user-friendly book which details how to partake in and document action research projects. Some excellent accounts of worked examples are found in the book. The book guides you gently through the process of doing and writing action research.
