Language & Literacy in the Early Years 0-7

Fourth Edition

February 2010 | 264 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Praise for the previous edition:

"The text relates theory and practice in an easily readable form with particularly helpful sections on key terminology and summaries within each chapter. A most useful, practical text which no early years practitioner should be without" - Jacqueline Barbera, Director of Undergraduate ITT, Liverpool Hope University College

This Fourth Edition of Language and Literacy in the Early Years has been fully revised and updated to reflect current professional interests and the latest developments in the field. The book provides comprehensive coverage of issues in language, literacy and learning, focusing on the age range from birth to eight years. New material covers theory of mind, key persons, and social and emotional dimensions of learning. The author has added material on difficulties with language development; phonics and the new literacies. Key terms, further reading and a revised layout make the book accessible to students.

The author emphasizes the joy and creativity involved in supporting young children's development as speakers, writers and readers. While taking account of current initiatives and programs, the author supports flexible teaching methods in what is a complex teaching and learning process. The book is fully illustrated with examples and photos from early childhood settings.

This book is essential reading for primary and early years students, practitioners, classroom assistants and foundation stage teachers.

I found this a very helpful text for anyone studying young children's language and communication. It 'demystified' some terms from linguistics for me. Marian argues strongly for building on home learning in settings and for using a 'whole language' environment to promote writing and reading in young children.

This book has an interesting scope, (spoken) language AND literacy within the whole 0-7 years area. This broad perspective regarding the mixture og (spoken) language and literacy, and regarding age, makes the book relevant for a course like the one in question, as it is a course set on constructing a similar broad and continous perspective regarding language and literacy from age 0 and into primary school.

An excellent text book for students undertaking Early Years courses to enable them to develop a good understanding of language development and reasons as to why elements of practice within early years settings are essential to ensure the strong development of children's language. The book incorporates excellent practical ideas, examples from practice and links to appropriate developmental theory. It is accessible and easy to understand ideal for those who wish to develop a deeper understanding of child development.
