Management and Labour Studies (MLS) is the official publication of XLRI, Xavier School of Management, Jamshedpur, published in collaboration with Sage Publications. XLRI is one of the oldest B-schools in India to bring a change in the economy and society at large.

MLS, first published in 1975, has followed the ancient Indian spirit of ‘jñana’ that centres around the experience of reality and is the only way of sublimation and liberation.   Resonating with the central idea of empirical learning the first issue of MLS advocated the incorporation of basic managerial skills in life and the impact of wages on industrial dispute along with other impactful management theories. The journal continues to publish articles that foreground theories and practices advancing managerial decision making.

The journal has maintained its international character by publishing articles from around the globe that span across industries and fields.  The journal is committed to publishing research that is characterised by its rigour, relevance, and potential for making a significant contribution to the field of business. MLS believes that contemporary business practices are situated at the layered intersectionalities of operations, processes, and behavior.  Studies and papers written by scholars and practitioners in various fields of business and management are published in the journal.

The journal’s editorial team comprises distinguished professors from well-known institutions both from India and across the world. The diverse team of academicians from different areas of management add intellectual depth to the journal.


A high standard of academic rigour is maintained through a double-blind peer-review process. Addressed to professional managers and academicians, this quarterly refereed journal offers several key insights into theory, practice and policymaking. Moreover, it also has been at the forefront in offering effective reference tools for industry leaders.


This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)

The purpose of MLS is to stimulate scholarly conversations around the areas of business governance, policy, and actions that should have significance for society at large. The Journal provides a platform for researchers, executives, and policymakers to formulate propositions that uphold and advance sustainable business practices. The Journal invites the academic community and business practitioners to make original submissions that advance theoretical perspectives, provide empirical findings based on data gathered from multiple settings, and propose practical applications in the field of business research.

MLS aims to disseminate academic research inspired by developing trends and professionally informed views. Manuscripts that significantly contribute to the present understanding of how to improve business praxis are given priority. The journal welcomes original articles from both academicians and practitioners in the following business and management tracks:

The journal also encourages contributors to submit research articles from the associated fields of business, including social and behavioral sciences, consumer research, communication, law, public policy, and economics, that demonstrate clear managerial implications.

As part of its editorial policy, the journal aims to publish articles falling under three categories: original research articles, commentary and practice perspective. Original research comprises articles that might be empirical or conceptual in nature. Additionally, mathematical models written in the fields of finance, marketing, strategic management, supply chain management, information systems, operations research, human resources management, and economics, among others, will be classified under original research. Commentary papers should provide novel insights on important business topics that are grounded in theory and supported by empirical data. The practice perspective section is a novel approach in its intention to bring the experience and insights of the practitioners to the research forum and establish a connect between the academic community and the business stakeholders
