Handling Qualitative Data
A Practical Guide

Second Edition

Other Titles in:
Qualitative Research

232 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

This Second Edition of Lyn Richards' best-selling book provides an accessible introduction to qualitative research for students and practitioners. Recognizing that for many new researchers dealing with data is the main point of departure, this book helps them to acquire a progressive understanding of the skills and methodological issues that are central to qualitative research.

Lyn Richards provides clear and pragmatic guidance on how to handle, reflect on and get results from small amounts of data, while at the same time showing how a consideration of methods and their philosophical underpinnings informs how we should best handle our data.

This book also covers all the processes of making, meeting, sorting, coding, documenting and exploring qualitative data, smoothly integrating software use and the discussion of the main challenges that readers are likely to encounter. It guides novice researchers to achieve valid and useful outcomes from qualitative analysis, and to ensure they do justice to their data.

New to this Edition:

  • Increased coverage of issues about the researcher's relation to their data and ethical implications
  • An expanded section on preparing for data collection and reflecting on the nature of data.

A password-protected Instructor Teaching Site and an open-access Student Study Site are available for this book at http://www.uk.sagepub.com/richards/ and includes the following resources:

  • Live, detailed case studies of qualitative methods in practice, linking to publications and illustrative material. Researchers tell the stories of projects, from design, through what was actually done with the data, to how analysis was achieved and reported;
  • A software guide with links to information and tutorials in several products.

'While this book scratches the surface of qualitative research overall, the focus always remains on qualitative data. The author glides through important areas of qualitative research and presents them with a "you can do it" tone...serves as a great companion to an advanced undergraduate research course or a research design course at the master's level' - The Qualitative Report

I believe this text will serve my Data Analysis graduate students solid techniques in qualitative data analysis.

As the sub title of this text suggests this book is a practical guide to the skills of qualitative data analysis. It also has the added value of easily accessible website links for students.

This book is useful but aimed at those students who are actually carrying out research. At degree level this is not appropriate and therfore suggest that it is aimed at the masters students.

Introduction

Chapter One

Lyn Richards

About the authorLyn Richards has a highly unusual range of relationships with qualitative research. After undergraduate training as a historian and political scientist, she moved to sociology. Her early work as a family sociologist addressed both popular and academic audiences, with a strong motivation always to make the funded research relevant to the people studied, and the qualitative analysis credible to those affected. Each of her four books in family sociology was a text at university level but also widely discussed in popular media and at community level. During her tenure as Reader and Associate Professor at La Trobe University in... More About Author
