A good base for students to begin to study physical development from. The photographs were particularly helpful - especially for those students who have not yet been in a setting - to give idea of how to promote physical development

A useful text that I will be adding to our reading list. Foundation degree students may find the sections on play-based curricula relating to ages and stages particularly informative. Photography usefully indicates where module content, such as the development of proprioceptive systems, can be observed in settings -- a valuable link between theory and practice.

Carol Archer has taught in early childhood education and primary schools for over two decades and is currently an advisory teacher for the Integrated Early Years Service in the London Borough of Camden. She also works as a movement-play practitioner/consultant in other education authorities. Iram Siraj

Iram Siraj is Professor of ECE at the Institute of Education, University of London and the University of Wollongong in Australia. Iram’s recent research projects have included leading on the:  Evaluation of the Foundation Phase across Wales and she is  a principal investigator of the major DfE 17 -year study on Effective Pre-school, Primary and Secondary Education (EPPSE 3-16, 1997-2014) and of the influential Researching Effective Pedagogy in the Early Years project (REPEY).
