Publish your Article Open Access in a SAGE Subscription Journal with SAGE Choice

Frequently asked questions

The SAGE Choice program offers authors the option to publish their article open access in hybrid SAGE subscription journals. It also enables authors to comply with funding body requirements, where publishing research papers open access is a stipulation of funding, while still publishing their article in the hybrid journal of their choice.


Launch Journals

SAGE has established a policy for launch journals in order to increase usage and interest in these new, unique titles.

For Individual Libraries
These journals will be freely available to libraries via an IP-registered trial for the first year of publication (volume 1). This will allow you to add the journals to your knowledgebase and make them available to users at your library via searches and your library catalog. This offer includes perpetual access to volume 1.


Pure Gold Open Access Journals

The following lists the pure gold open access journals published by SAGE. All articles published in the journals provide worldwide, barrier-free access to the full-text of articles online, immediately on publication under a creative commons license. All articles are rigorously peer-reviewed retaining the quality hallmarks of the academic publishing process that authors would experience in publishing in any traditional SAGE journal.


Author Information

Authors can make their article open access either via the gold OA publishing or green OA archiving as described below.

A number of funders require research articles which have resulted from their funding to be made open access, including RCUK, NIH and Wellcome Trust. SAGE helps authors comply with these mandates either via the gold open access publication route or green open access archiving.

What is open access?

Open access content is made freely available to under the terms of a Creative Commons licence. Open access publication is usually subject to payment of an article processing charge (APC) paid by the author, institution or funding body. 


Re-use of Open Access Content

All licenses require that re-use complies with the following terms:

  • Full attribution must accompany any re-use and include the following information about the original work:

    Author(s)
    Article Title
    Journal
    DOI
    Volume (if applicable)
    Issue (if applicable)
    Page numbers (if applicable)
    Date of publication
    SAGE as the original publisher
    A link to the original article as published on SAGE Journals (where practicable)


Gold Open Access Article Processing Charge Waivers

Corresponding Authors who reside in the countries described by the Research4Life program (both Group A and Group B) publishing in one of SAGE’s gold open access journals will automatically receive a full APC waiver without needing to take any action. The waiver will be applied based on the Corresponding Author affiliation in the SAGE Open Access Portal.

The Green Route – Open Access Archiving Policy

Authors can make their articles Open Access by archiving their article at no charge via the Green route.

Authors who have published in a subscription journal can do this by depositing the version of the article accepted for publication (version 2) in their own institution’s repository.
