This text provides a useful overview of how to conduct, structure and design case study research. It is a useful text for undergraduates as it also introduces ethical considerations that are, at times, overlooked in other texts. The specific boundaries that require evaluation as part of the research design process are well represented in this text.

In the field of supply chain and logistics management, empirical data are mostly required as an essential input in order to perceive real situation for developing new knowledge. Therefore, to provide the validity of results, research methodology must be conducted through the appropriate principle. This book can benefit to students and researchers in this field.

The book will be recommende as a substitut reading for the course Methods of social science (Master 1st semester) but also as reding for the course Innovation - Theory and practice
where student research is an integral part of the course and the students will be doing a case study on innovation in the region.
The book gives a good overview over the case study method and is an exellent handbook for students meking their first attempt at doing case studies. The many examples and step by step illustrations make the book very accessable to beginners and a good handbook for more experianced researchers. The new version also has more exercises and activities for students and is therefore, in my view, an exellent textbook for student research projects.

Yin’s book is a classic text on conducting case study research. It is clearly indicated by the fact that it is already the fifth edition of this work. Yin thoroughly covers all aspects of case study research and provides excellent guidelines for students who wants to conduct such a study in both the qualitative and quantitative approaches. The language is clear and easy understandable. The good examples of cases studies are very helpful and practical. For post-graduate students that wants to undertake case study research, it is one of the must read books.

  • expanded discussion on logic models

  • a brief glossary

  • New Features in this Edition

The challenge in composing this 5th edition has been twofold: to retain the book's key features and organization from earlier editions because of the warm reception given to those earlier editions, but to expand and enhance the presentation because of the advances in case study research since the 4th edition. Hopefully, the result also is twofold: Those familiar with the 4th edition should feel that the 5th edition has not changed all that much, but the new material and more detailed coverage of certain topics should be readily apparent.

Added breadth and depth. Large portions of the new material now appear apart from the main text—to avoid disrupting the original organization from earlier editions—but also to make the new material easy to find. The material in Appendices A and B add breadth by covering brief notes about the role of case study research in two fields: psychology and evaluation. Although the main text, as with earlier editions, still gives scattered reference to these two topics, the growing use of case study research in psychology and in evaluation suggested the need for highlighting the two topics in separate places at the end of the book.

The added depth comes in the form of 7 tutorials, located at the end of relevant chapters. Each tutorial provides a more detailed if not slightly more advanced discussion on a central topic already covered by the main text. The tutorials respond to reviewers who asked that the text provide more information about these topics, to aid the more ambitious case study researchers. The tutorials explore the complexity of certain central topics—but still in roughly vignette length—and also provide a few key references for further inquiry. At the same time, the main reason for separating the tutorials from the main text is because the main text already conveys the essential ideas on the central topic. As a result, the tutorials can be easily skipped if a researcher already has command of the topic or wants to avoid the greater complexity. Hopefully, this use of the tutorials also poses less of a threat to the compactness of the original book—which reviewers considered one of the book's main virtues.

Additional changes in the 5th edition. In addition to the new material just discussed, the 5th edition has benefited from an extensive amount of editing and rewriting (every sentence was revisited). All of the changes have been aimed at keeping the book as crisp as possible—despite the presence of the new materials—to help budding social scientists feel comfortable as they become acquainted with case study research. Aside from the sheer editing and copyediting, the more substantive clarifications are as follows:

? Greater attention to doing case studies under relativist (or interpretivist) as well as realist

    –An introductory discussion (Chapter 1)

–Clarification that field interviews can be motivated by either epistemology (Chapter 3)

–Change of terms from facts to findings, to accommodate the option of having field

participants' multiple realities as the relevant findings (Chapter 4 and elsewhere)

–Option for presenting participants' perspectives in case study reports (Chapter 6)

? A tightened definition of case study research (Chapter 1) and clearer definition of the case

    (Chapter 2)

? A more pointed discussion of the use of analytic generalization as the preferred strategy

for generalizing case study findings (Chapter 2)

? The addition of other new terms:

–For single-case studies, a change of terms from unique and typical to unusual

and common, reinforcing the book's position that cases not be considered

a sample of any larger universe or population (Chapter 2)

–In the case study protocol, a change from case study questions (the original but

inappropriate reference to the questions to be posed during data collection)

to data collection questions, to reduce confusion because the former term has

properly been used to refer to the questions of the full case study, not just of

    the data collection (Chapter 3)

? An expanded discussion of researchers' values and ethics, as well as of the procedures

for protecting human subjects (Chapter 3)

? For data collection procedures (Chapter 4):

-An expanded discussion on the collection of interview data

–A new reference to memo-writing as an adjunct to data collection procedures

–New material on the care needed when collecting evidence from electronic

    sources and social media websites

? A greater emphasis on an inductive strategy for analyzing data, with a new discussion under the

heading, working your data from the ground up (Chapter 5)

? An expanded discussion of the use of logic models, with new figures (Figs. 5.5 and 5.6)

? Enhancements in composing case study reports, noting that having a flair for

composing does not hurt (Chapter 6):

–A new discussion, as recommended by reviewers, on previously-underemphasized

portions of the case study report: the methodology section and the literature review

–A new reference to the parallel between case study reporting and nonfiction writing

–A reorganized sequence of sections in Chapter 6, making the flow more logical

? An expanded coverage and references to a broader set of case studies:

–Case study methodological works in specific disciplines and professions (sampler

found in Fig. 1.1, Chapter 1)

–Nine new case studies in the BOXES, four case studies covering a previously

    underemphasized topic—international affairs (see BOXES 4, 7D, 26, 37, and 49 and

a fifth such case that appears in Tutorial 6-1)

? A brief glossary of terms directly related to case study research (but not social science

    research more generally)

? Updated and expanded citations throughout the text, with a large increase in the number of

references listed at the end of the book

Given all these features in the 5th edition, one place where the book has not changed at all deserves repeated mention: Donald Campbell's insightful foreword. His succinct words, written nearly 30 years ago, still stand as a masterpiece about social science methods. Within the context of today's research dialogues, Campbell's work continues, remarkably, to speak with freshness and direct relevance. His foreword also positions well the role of case study research as portrayed in this book. I continue to be deeply honored by the inclusion of this foreword and have attempted to return but a modest contribution, now to his memory, in a subsequent publication (Yin, 2000b).

Overall, the continued advances in case study research have heavily influenced the revisions in the 5th edition. For instance, the new materials unhesitatingly add some more difficult concepts in doing case study research. As a result, readers should be forewarned that this edition may again be "harder" than the earlier ones. However, successful adoption of this edition's techniques and guidance also means that case study research will be better than in the past. The ultimate goal, as always, is to improve our social science methods and practices over those of previous generations of scholars. Only in this manner can every generation make its own mark, much less establish its own competitive niche.
